Components of the Water System

Our Water System

Our municipal water system is a groundwater system. That means we get our water supply from a groundwater source. The Water Department currently maintains and operates  four wells to supply our customers.

The Water Department operates and maintains more than 40 miles of watermain in our distribution system.  We also maintain and operate two storage tanks that supply water to our gravity fed system.  Several years ago we built a pumphouse where we can connect to the Elmira Water Board in case of an emergency.

Along with the wells, pumphouses,  watermain and storage tanks, you will also find around 400 hydrants and a few thousand valves of various types and sizes.  On top of all of these items we also have close to 2000 meters to read.
