Update on the COVID-19 for the Town of Big Flats

Now that we are in Phase two of New York region opening plan there are still several business and municipal functions that are not allowed at this time. We are working with Chemung County and our local sports group to have a plan in place for our youth. The Town Hall is open for regular business and DPW continues working on our 2020 road program along with drainage projects. I have made a commitment to work with all local business to help them through the crisis. We have several new housing projects in the planning stages and commercial projects.

We are rebranding Big Flats as the "Southern Tier Gateway to the Finger Lakes". We are working with business in Big Flats to help promote our community as a great place to live and work. We are strong community and I want to thank all for stay safe with the COVID-19.

The town by New York State Governors Decollation must closed the town Parks playgrounds, basketball courts and pavilions during the COVID-19 emergency. With this, basketball courts are also closed. Walking trails are open but people must maintain the six foot rule. Signs are posted as to this, so please let's keep Big Flats safe during this time. The Big Flats Community Center will be closed until August 1st and the town court until further notice. Thanks for your help and for your understanding.

We are moving forward with several drainage projects that have been approved by FEMA and our time senctive for future flooding. highway will continue with necessary projects and will do it within the COVID-19 guidelines. Valley View will start the week of June1st.

The COVID-19, we have seven cases in the town. You can be updated by using the county website at WWW.chemung countyny.gov. You then location the COVID-19 and it will lead you to the most current map and figures. For information on the COVID-19 go to the website below or call the number. I am also posting it on the Town's website and Facebook

Over the next two weeks several decisions will be made about the summer Taffy program, sports programs and cuts to the town's budget. The first indication we have had as to taxes was the room tax for March which was down 59%. Along with lower gas prices and use, hotel rooms empty, restaurants with only take out, flights at the airport way down and many stores closed, we are expecting sales taxes to be down 50 to 60%, meaning loses to the town of $500,000 of dollars this year.

The town board meetings will be held the second and fourth Wednesday of the month  at 4:30PM via ZOOM will be post on the website until August 1st.
