Deputy Supervisor Edward Fairbrother
Edward Fairbrother, a resident of Big Flats for 33 years is starting his fourth term on the board and is the Deputy Town Supervisor. As a past member of the Planning Board, Edward is deeply invested in the interests of the town. “I was approached by citizens in the town to run. They felt that a solid business background was needed on the Town Board. Having been a member of the Planning Board, I realized the need to protect the best interest of our Town. I want to preserve and make sure future generations want to make Big Flats their home.”
Ed acknowledges that the biggest problem facing Big Flats is balancing business growth with maintaining the rural atmosphere. He is concerned with cuts in state and county budgets and the effects it will have on the rural areas. The struggle to maintain roads and traffic flow without interrupting the lives of residents is a constant concern, as are issues with sewer and water systems.
To deal with these issues the Town Board is in the process of reviewing zoning regulations and analyzing the Town’s comprehensive plan. For budget issues, Edward believes that the Board must use solid business practices. He also feels that it is important to listen and address the needs of the Town and its residents.
His experience and contribution to the Town is extensive. In the past he as served as the President of Big Flats Cinderella Softball and the Big Flats Lions Club. He was the chairman of Big Flats Community Days, facility chairman of the Chemung County YMCA, chairman of St. Mary Our Mother Parish Festival, and a member of the Board of Directors of Alfred Tech. He and his wife, Mary Lee, have three grown children and three grandsons and a granddaughter. They are very proud that their son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter have chosen to be residents of Big Flats.
