Over 80% of the residents in the Town of Big Flats are located in the Horseheads School District and attend school at the Big Flats Elementary School, Horseheads Middle School and Horseheads High School. The Horseheads School District is a small district with a strong emphasis on academic success through knowledge and experience with technology, arts, and athletics.

Chemung Valley Montessori School

The Chemung Valley Montessori School was founded in 1974 and offers a fully-certified Montessori program at the preprimary, kindergarten, elementary, and middle school levels. The school operates five days a week and offers before and after school programs for enrolled students.

Corning Community College

Corning Community College offers an extensive yet affordable range of educational, cultural, and social opportunities to a diverse population of Full and Part Time learners. CCC focuses on student achievement by stressing quality teaching and personal attention. An emphasis on high standards of quality and technological advancement provides a flexible learning environment in which students are prepared for a life of service to their professions and their communities in a globally interdependent society. CCC promotes intellectual and personal growth, meets the educational needs of the community through transfer, career, certificate, and training programs, and enhances economic development.

The main CCC campus is located about 10 miles to the east of Big Flats on Spencer Hill in Corning, New York. CCC also has a branch campus at Airport Corporate Park in Big Flats and a Criminal Justice Center featuring the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy in East Corning. The newest addition is the newly renovated Elmira Academic and Workforce Development Center on Madison Ave in Elmira.

CCC offers over 45 programs of study in fields such as Business, Computers, Health Services, Human Services, Protective Services, and Technologies. CCC graduates earn a two year Associates Degree or certificate that prepares them for successful careers in Law Enforcement, Business, Auto Mechanics, Computer Repair, or as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Corning Community College at Airport Corporate Park in Big Flats is a training center and automotive technology center. CCC at Airport Corporate Park is a state-of-the-art facility that offers classes, laboratories, training, and meeting space. It is close to both the airport and the Arnot Mall, and is easily accessible from Interstate 86 from Exit 50. This facility also houses automotive technology classes, technical laboratories, and computer labs and is an authorized MasterCAM training center.

Elmira College

Within 15 minutes to the East is Elmira College. Elmira College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college emphasizing both general and professional education in the belief that this provides the best preparation for responsible global citizenship and a lifetime of careers.

Each academic program is built upon strong general education in the liberal arts and sciences, with special attention given to the development of communication skills and the exploration of world cultures. Students also have the opportunity to participate in field experience projects related to career goals, and the College provides an unique range of other off-campus learning options, including a community service requirement.

Elmira College offers baccalaureate degrees in various fields including Business, Education, Nursing, Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Psychology, Political Science, Accounting, Theatre, History, Speech and Hearing, and several other fields of study in the sciences and social sciences. Elmira also offers Masters degrees in Education and Advanced Certificate Programs in Mark Twain Studies and Training of Trainers.

In addition, the college provides courses during weeknights, weekends, and during the summer for Part Time or Continuing Education students.

The Elmira College campus is located on the North side of the City of Elmira and consists of over 40 acres and 25 buildings for instructional, residential, social, and cultural programs. Elmira College is also home to the Mark Twain Study, an octagonal study in which Mark Twain wrote some of his most famous works, including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”. It is the home of the Center for Mark Twain Studies and includes the Mark Twain Exhibit in Hamilton Hall.

Elmira Business Institute

Also located 10 miles away in the City of Elmira is the Elmira Business Institute in Langdon Plaza. Elmira Business Institute is a privately owned business college offering degree and certificate programs that focus on providing career training for fields such as Medical Assistant, Accounting, Legal Office Assistant, Office Assistant, Office Technology, Medical Office Assistant, and Business Accounting. The mission of EBI is to enhance the ability of each student enrolled through career education.

EBI offers several student support services including a Career Placement Office that provides career placement assistance to EBI graduates for life. Other services include housing assistance, child care referrals, internship programs, and academic support.
